Child killer sentenced to life imprisonment
Rikki Ngatai-Check, 23, was sentenced in the High Court in Wellington today for life with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years after earlier being found guilty of murdering 2 year old Karl Perigo-Check in Whanganui October 2009.

New legislation to prevent child abuse set for 2011

Imprisonment for failing to pay fines discriminates against Māori and poor
The head of prison reform advocacy group Rethinking Crime and Punishment says imprisoning people for non-payment of traffic fines would discriminate against Māori and the poor.
