Deed of Settlement initialled between Rongowhaata and the Crown

On Wednesday a deed of settlement was initialled between Rongowhaata and the Crown.  The settlement includes ownership of the historic Te Hau ki Turanga meeting house, financial redress of $22 million, plus interest since 2008, the return of several Crown-owned properties in the Gisborne region, and an apology.

Changes to legal aid funding for treaty claims

Effective from 1 July 2011, legal aid funding which had been available for treaty settlement negotiations will be transferred to the Office of Treaty Settlements for allocation as claimant funding.

Ngāti Rangiwewehi and Tapuika sign agreements in principle with Crown

Today at Parliament, Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson signed agreements in principle with representatives from Ngāti Rangiwewehi and Tapuika. The Minister of Treaty Negotiation, Chris Finlayson, has rejected Ngāti Kahu  proposed Deed of Partial Settlement (partial appears to mean a proposal for a land settlement in the near future, with financial compensation to follow, possibly over generations).

Fresh water policy package announced

On Monday the Minister of Agriculture David Carter announced the governments fresh water policy package, designed to protect and clean up fresh water water ways.  The policy package is called the water protection management  package.
