Housing shortage predicted

  A New Zealand Housing Report ( 2009/2010: Structure, Pressures and Issues) has  predicted a national shortage of more than 14,000 homes within the next five years.

Proposed minimum wage increase not enough says Māori Party

On Wednesday, Prime Minister John Key’s announced that there is likely to be a “moderate adjustment” of 2% for the minimum wage.  This equates to a rise of $0.25 an hour ($12.75 to $13 an hour) or $10.00 gross per week for a 40 hour working week.

Too many Māori drive themselves to death

Transport Minister Steven Joyce has released a report showing a core of problem drivers causes one in three deaths on our roads. The Ministry of Transport report shows that between 2005 and 2009, 642 people were killed in crashes where high-risk drivers were at fault.

Imprisonment for failing to pay fines discriminates against Māori and poor

The head of prison reform advocacy group Rethinking Crime and Punishment says imprisoning people for non-payment of traffic fines would discriminate against Māori and the poor. Independent review of Te Ara Taura to be led by Heta Hingston

Te Ara Taura executive head Tukoroirangi Morgan announced that the iwi will move forward with an independent review of its activities and processes.   The review will be led by retired Maori Land Court judge Heta Hingston. 

Human Rights Commission’s annual review of Treaty of Waitangi

The Human Rights Commission’s annual review of Treaty of Waitangi issues found  significant progress had been made in the past year.  Of noteworthy mention were the large number of treaty settlement, support for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the establishment of Whānau Ora and the announcement of a constitutional review.

Large political attendance expected at Ratana celebrations

Annual Ratana celebrations  commenced today at Ratana Pa.  Prime Minister John Key will be attending celebrations , along with Labour leader Phil Goff, Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei,  and Māori Party co-leaders Tariana Turia and Dr Pita Sharples.  Te Tai Tokerau MP, Hone Harawira has also confirmed his attendence.

The United Nations question New Zealand on child poverty and mortality rates

  Last week,  New Zealand government officials met with the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child  to discuss findings from the combined third and fourth periodic report of New Zealand on how it is implementing the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Inflation increases to 4%

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measured an increase of inflation to 4% for the December 2010 quarter, following increases of 1.5% and 1.7% in the years to the September and June 2010 quarters, respectively.

Social Development Minister – announces inquiry into West Auckland child abuse case

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has appointed former Ombudsman Mel Smith to lead a Ministerial inquiry, investigating matters relating to a serious case of child abuse against a nine year old Māori girl, living in West Auckland.
