Māori academic and leader dies suddenly

On December 30th 2010, Dr Mark Laws (Ngāti Awa, Tuwharetoa, and Te Arawa), associate professor at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, drowned while diving at the East Cape settlement of Te Kaha.

Ngāti Apa settle treaty claim

Last week Ngāti Apa  iwi settled there treaty claim with the Crown.   The iwi accepted a $28 million package including cash, cultural redress and housing assistance, forest land and the right to buy Ohakea air base and other Crown properties if they are made surplus.

Ngāti Pahauwera sign settlement deed

The Trustees of the Ngāti Pahauwera Development Trust and Ngāti Pahauwera Tiaki Trust are pleased to annouce that the Special Resolution to ratify the Deed of Settlement of the historical Treaty claims of Ngāti Pahauwera, and to amend the Deeds of Trust of the Ngāti Pahauwera Development Trust and NgātiPahauwera Tiaki Trust was successfully passed.

Te Wānanga O Aotearoa to deliver secondary school education

Te Wānanga O Aotearoa has received confirmation to establish vocationally-oriented secondary schools or tai wānanga in Palmerston North and Hamilton.  However, they intend to trend cautiously. Te Wānanga O Aotearoa  Chief Executive Bentham Ohia says the schools will have a Māori kaupapa but the language of instruction will be English.
